Sarah Gilford set to perform in Jacob Lenz with Stadttheater Klagenfurt
Jakob Lenz, an one act chamber opera by Wolfgang Rihm based on Georg Büchner's Lenz, is set to open on 3rd Febuary 2022 at Stadttheater Klagenfurt, featuring CLB’s very own Sarah Gilford.
Jakob Michael Lenz, a style-defining poet for the era of Sturm und Drang, fell ill with schizophrenia at the age of 27. In 1778, a socially committed pastor Johann Friedrich Oberlin took the poet into his home and hoped, together with philosopher Christoph Kaufmann, to be able to counteract Lenz's mental illness. Oberlin described the poet's increasing mental decline in his notes, which in 1835 inspired the 22-year-old writer, Georg Büchner to write his novella Lenz, which inspired the 25-year-old composer Wolfgang Rihm to write a chamber opera almost 150 years later.
