Johanna Malangré continues her admirable outreach work in a series of concerts for children

before resuming her busy schedule of orchestral engagements, johanna malangré directs an original symphonic fairytale, attracting young people into the concert hall

Outside of her outreach work with the Orchestre de Picardie, Johanna Malangré regularly directs concerts that aim to bring young people, as well as those who have little experience of classical music, into the concert hall. This week, Johanna conducts the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz orchestra in a series of four concerts at the BASF-Feierabendhaus in Ludwigshafen, Germany. These accessible performances feature a contemporary work, Yoko Shimomura’s ‘Merregnon: Land of Silence. A Symphonic Tale’ (concert version by Jonne Valtonen 2020), accompanying a cartoon film. The composer is known for her work on multi-million selling video games, and her music beautifully reflects the on-screen action; where each character in the story has their own melody, the children in the audience are able to easily follow the narrative and at once fall in love with the sounds of the orchestra.

At the start of next month, Johanna Malangré will direct the Orchestre Victor Hugo in a programme of Brahms, Eötvös, a contemporary Hungarian composer, Kodály, another Hungarian favourite, and a ‘mystery work’. This stark difference to the children’s concerts that Malangré directs this week is a testament to her versatility and skill, as well as her passion for all music across a range of genres.

Later May, Johanna Malangré will join the cellist Gautier Capuçon once more, a couple months after the release of his album titled ‘Sensations’. The Orchestre National de Bretagne will perform works taken from this CD, which span a range of different genres, including opera, film music, French song, and symphonic music.

Finally, Malangré will return to her own orchestra, the Orchestre de Picardie, for the next programme of the season, titled ‘Light’. The orchestra will explore the music of Grażyna Bacewicz, a Polish female composer of the 21st century recognised for both her neoclassical and avant-garde styles, Darius Milhaud’s Jeux de printemps and Mozart’s Symphony No.29.
