Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg is set to present an operatic double-bill entitled Zu unseren Schwestern, zu unseren Brüdern, featuring En vertu de… and Der Kaiser von Atlantis. A new opera by Eugene Birman entitled En Vertu de… set to reflect the rise of extremism in Europe and explores what the current rising tide means to the European Constitution. Austrian composer Viktor Ullmann’s opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis makes up the second half of the programme. Ullman’s opera was composed in 1943 in the Theresien-stadt concentration camp, with librettist Peter Kien, who later perished in Auschwitz, is a true reflection of life in the camp and the authoritarian ascendancy of the Third Reich. Der Kaiser von Atlantis features CLB tenor Benjamin Alunni who is set to play the role of Harlekin.
