Victor Jacob conducts Rigoletto at Opéra de Rouen Haute-Normandie
Inspired by Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s'amuse (The King Amuses Himself), Giuseppe Verdi made his opera Rigoletto much more famous than his predecessor! It must be said that the scintillating orchestration and dazzling arias always hit the mark, while the story is packed with emotions.
It is difficult not to empathise with Rigoletto, while the jester of the Duke of Mantua hangs a terrible curse. To adapt the opera to a young audience while remaining faithful to the original story, the director Manuel Renga has opted for a mise en abyme (mirroring technique) where a troupe gives a performance of Rigoletto, revealing in passing the theatrical machinery and certain techniques allowing to create scenic illusions. With a participatory device that allows young audiences to sing the choirs, aiming to inspire the next generation of artists.
With Victor Jacob helming the role of music director, the opera premieres on the 14th January 2022 with Opéra de Rouen Normandie.
