Sarah Gilford is to perform the role of Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto at Stadttheater Klangenfurt, opening on March 17th
Rigoletto is the first opera in Giuseppe Verdi's »trilogia popolare«. As in La Traviata and Il Trovatore, the plot revolves around a person on the fringes of society. Not only his physical deformity, but also his excessive and arrogant behavior made the court jester Rigoletto an outsider at the court of the Duke of Mantua. The only happiness in life is his daughter Gilda, whom he carefully keeps hidden. But the courtiers use a ruse to kidnap Gilda and hand him over to the unscrupulous duke. When Rigoletto learns that Gilda loves her seducer, he hires an assassin to kill the duke. But Gilda voluntarily sacrifices her life for her love.
