Proust, music programmer?

Those familiar with In Search of Lost Time’ will only be half surprised, as music is central to his work.

To nourish his narrative, he went so far as to ask the greatest performers to play for him.

What is less well known is that he sometimes held a musical salon, such as the intimate dinner-concert he organised at the Ritz in 1907. So the proposal is simple: what if one listened to what Proust wanted to hear and make his guests listen? In this programme, which delves into the roots of French music as much as it testifies to Proust's fascination with the Wagnerian gesture, Fauré occupies a special place. We know, of course, the high esteem in which Proust held him; the 'Sonate de Vinteuil; certainly exuded for him the subtle impression of the man who was then the tutelary figure of the French music scene. Indeed, Fauré was to be the guest of honour of the evening, but he declined the invitation at the last moment.
